Bringing North Carolina’s Social Workers Together in One Story

When North Carolina’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) set out to onboard new social workers, they wanted something unique—videos that would not only educate but inspire. Working alongside the agency, we developed a documentary-style series that authentically captured the stories of individuals across the child welfare system, from veteran social workers and foster parents to former foster youth. The goal was to create a cohesive piece that felt like one continuous “day in the life,” despite filming across three locations around the state.

Capturing the Heart of North Carolina’s Child Welfare System

Our team at Locals Video took a hands-on approach to bring each scene together. Filming took place over three days in Raleigh, Charlotte, and Asheville, and with each location came new perspectives and experiences. By collaborating closely with the agency, we ensured each day’s shoot connected seamlessly to form a unified narrative. This approach allowed us to capture not only the practical aspects of the job but also the compassion and dedication that drive North Carolina’s social workers.

Creating a Cohesive Visual Story

One of the primary challenges—and our biggest focus—was making three days of filming feel like one single day spent traveling across the state. To do this, we emphasized consistent visual elements and smooth transitions, blending candid interviews with “day-in-the-life” scenes to give viewers an immersive experience. By combining multi-camera setups, handheld shots, and a range of perspectives, we brought a sense of continuity and realism to the series.

A Resource for Inspiration and Onboarding

The final product was a versatile set of videos that DHHS can use across their channels to welcome and train new social workers. Each video provides a unique look into the lives of those who dedicate themselves to child welfare in North Carolina, offering new hires a genuine, insightful introduction to the field. This project was a meaningful opportunity to tell the stories of social workers who make a difference every day—and to showcase the resilience and passion that new hires will be joining.
